2022 Positive Space

Site: AIM Center, 472 West MLK Blvd

Lead Artist: Judith Mogul

Artists: 70 members from the AIM Center and the family of Bonnie Currey Stamps

Partners:  AIM Center

Description: After Bonnie Currie-Stamps, co-founder and 25 year President and Executive Director of the AIM Center passed away in February of 2021, a committee of AIM board members, family and friends of Bonnie was formed in order to find a way to honor her memory. Mark Making proposed a large mosaic sculpture would be the ideal way to honor Bonnie and offer AIM Center members a role as artist participants. Visual Communications Director Judy Mogul agreed to design and oversee its creation.

The sculpture concept featured a negative space in the middle of two flat areas based on a drawing of Bonnie by AIM member and artist David Hudson. The two flat areas afforded the compositions of the tile elements created by members from the AIM Center as well as Bonnie’s family. Beyond resembling Bonnie, the negative space can also be seen as an invitation for anyone- anyone in need of AIM Center’s services.

A total of approximately 70 individuals created mosaic elements including flowers, butterflies, water elements and celestial bodies to be incorporated into Judy’s landscape inspired piece. Judy laid out the approximately 70 tile designs and wove them together with a dynamic tile background that also created a strong unified whole. AIM members plus Mark Making’s team applied Judy’s woven design areas onto the sculpture surface and grouted the tiles.

The funders for Positive Space include Bonnie’s husband John Stamps, her son Jeff Currey, family friend Alex Fischer, Olin and Norma Mills and AIM Center member Michael Smith.
