Scenic City Angel

Since 2018, Scenic City Angel has been serving Chattanooga with a two fold mission: to identify and offer financial assistance for pressing personal needs in economically disadvantaged communities in Chattanooga that are “stumbling blocks” for forward movement. Connie Willett serves as its director. Here are some examples:

A mom and her five children were living in her car and SCA paid for a hotel room and gift card for food for them until they could relocate to another town to be with relatives.

Northside Neighborhood House requested funding for graduation robes for three schools in Hamilton County. Without these, the seniors at these schools would not be able to participate in graduation. SCA provided the funding needed.

CALEB received two donations for bail for incarcerated people unable to pay their bail.

Several requests from the Partnership for Families and Children to pay for rent or disconnected utilities for families to keep them housed.

The Seed Theater provides a hygiene closet in the heart of downtown Chattanooga. They supply the residents of Patten Towers with necessities such as soap, toothpaste, toilet tissue, etc.

The Chattanooga Public Library Foundation runs an ongoing childrens’ program called the The Chattanooga Public Library Foundation runs an ongoing childrens’ program called the Charley Cart. This teaches nutrition and offers cooking classes for kids, using healthy options. It also introduces foods from other cultures and traditions and participates in special events for children at the library

SCA allow works with independent contractors to create youth programming:

Coach Tony Morgan runs football teams for currently 43 boys aged 6-14 years. These teams practice after school and on weekends and compete in tournaments around our area. This gives underserved youth in our community an outlet and a chance to belong to a safe space with positive role models. Currently there are 43 boys enrolled in this program.

Our cheerleaders program is supervised by Yelena Sanderfer and Destiny Robinson. This group of 23 10–15-year-olds go to all our football games and practice together during the week and on Saturdays.

Coach Tony also runs our landscaping employment program. This gives 8 teenagers employment opportunities while assisting senior citizens free yard work. These youth are paid $10 per hour and are paid twice monthly.

Southern Exposure is a unique performing arts program with a mission to celebrate the culture of the Chattanooga community by cultivating and mentoring diverse artists, presenters, and audiences in an eclectic, creative environment. We generate inclusive experiences and challenging conversations to connect audiences and artists.

Southern Exposure’s work is driven by the transformative power of oral history and storytelling and by a strong belief that social justice cannot be achieved without deep listening and learning from those marginalized, silenced, and ignored.

Since 2011, Southern Exposure has amplified the voices of hundreds of individuals from marginalized and silenced communities, including former coal miners and millworkers, domestics, justice-involved individuals, LGBTQ+ persons, individuals living with mental and physical disabilities, elders, and many more. In 2020 the organization grew to include one-on-one monologue performance coaching for storytellers and actors to bring oral histories to life on the theatrical stage.
